Abstract: Fractional-Order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (FOPID) controllers have been widely investigated in the last years because of their capability to enhance the performance of classic PID controllers for industrial processes. In this talk, after an introduction about the FOPID structure, different design and tuning methodologies will be presented. The use also of typical additional functionalities such as set-point weight, anti-windup, gain scheduling will be discussed. A comparison with PID controllers will be also presented so that the cost/benefit ratio improvement achievable with the use of fractional-order integral and derivative terms can be analyzed.
